Gay Marriage Quotes
“Congratulations gay people — you are about to discover the joys of alimony.” –Craig Ferguson, on a California judge’s ruling legalizing gay marriage
President Bush said he was ‘troubled’ by gay people getting married in San Francisco. He said on important issues like this the people should make the decision, not judges. Unless of course we’re choosing a president, then he prefers judges.” —Jay Leno
Every gay reader understands the secret self that is full and wonderful and has longing and tenderness and a desire for connection to other people. I think that arguments against gay marriage are just ridiculous! Who cares? People want to get married for the same reason I wanted to get married. They want to do it in front of their friends and family. They want it to be a legally binding thing. They want to have that commitment. The idea that there’s some moral issue about it is so ridiculous.”
— Lynda Carter, writing in Instinct Magazine, May 1, 2007
Actor and singer Carter performed in the popular 70s TV series Wonder Woman.
As much as the social conservatives might not like to hear it, there will be a time when your grandchildren say: ‘What was the argument with gay marriage? Who cares?’ ”
— Jim Kolbe, U.S. Rep. (R-Ariz.), December 29, 2006
“Marriage is a civil right. If you don’t want gay people to marry in your church, good for you. But you can’t say they can’t marry in your city.”
— Julian Bond, National NAACP chair, October 2006
Professor Jamie Raskin, had just finished testifying against Maryland’s anti-gay, anti-marriage amendment, when radical, right-wing Senator Nancy Jacobs (R), stood up and shouted:
“Mr. Raskin, my Bible says marriage is only between a man and a woman. What do you have to say about that?”
“Senator, when you took your oath of office, you placed your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution. You did not place your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible.”
— Jamie Raskin, American University law professor, March 1, 2006, Annapolis, Maryland
“Gay and lesbian people have families, and their families should have legal protection, whether by marriage or civil union. A constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages is a form of gay bashing, and it would do nothing at all to protect traditional marriages.”
— Coretta Scott King, Richard Stockton College, New Jersey, March 23, 2005
“It appears that no rational purpose exists for limiting marriage in this state to opposite-sex partners.”
— Richard Kramer, San Francisco Superior Court Judge, April 15, 2005

Hey Ceara! Thanks for leaving the comment.
I like that quote…”You put your hand on the Bible and
swore to uphold the Constitution. You didn’t put
your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold
the Bible.”
I’m so happy for California. The way I see it is what
if things were the other way around and only same
sexes could get married and have all the rights.
It isn’t any different.
Hugs!!
LAURIE–Ca is good news. Slowly but surely GLBT will have rights across the U.S.
Hi Ceara - I just want to ditto what Laurie says, and you’re right, one state at a time.
But what’s this nonsense about the people deserving a vote on Gay Marriage?
No-one deserves a vote which would allow you the power to prejudice someone else’s happiness. Democracy doesn’t exist to support the tyranny of the majority.
At the end of the day the notion of gay marriage might offend religious or otherwise bigoted sensitivities, but allowing Gay Marriage does not actually hurt anyone, therefore based on the “harm-principal” (see philosopher John Stuart Mills) social-conservatives have no right to impose their objection on others.
At the end of the day, just because its legal, doesn’t mean your local bible-basher has to go out and get a gay marriage. So why complain about something which doesn’t affect you?
Hey C!
Maybe now I can get you girls to move out here!!! You might just fall in love with Nor Cal!
Hugs,
Matty
i love the jay leno quote, funny yet so true
DAVID–I agree with you about the voting bit. Makes no sense in my world. But hey, maybe someday I could vote on weather or not straight people can get married.
But many states have voted into their consitiutions that marriage is only between a man and a woman.
MATTHEW– Cara and I have planes to fly out in Aug. I don’t know if I can keep up with Ca. I from the south I can barley stand the pace of the midwest.
QUEERUNITY–Jay Leno cracked me up with that.

Oooh, I moved to Cal from the Midwest and fell. in. love. Not much to keep up with. It’s laid back. The people are mostly chill (except for the uptight ones) and the beauty is breathtaking. You’ll have a blast.
JADE–What part of Ca. do you live? I’ve only seen the cities and they are hectic. I don’t know if I could live in one or near one of the major cities.
These are great quotes. I’m especially pleased to see Jay Leno saying something positive. Awesome! Great post.
I live in Fresno, which kinda sucks in many ways. But my travels to the coast, the mountains and to the Bay Area and Sacramento have been overwhelmingly positive.
We might just be suited for different things.
OH!! These quotes are great! Perfect chuckles today!
WEP-I enjoyed them too. There are tons of them at the link. I think people say some great things.
JADE-My grandmother lives in sonora, and it’s so dry there. (only have visited in the summer) I like beauty in any form. I think we’re flying in to Sacramento, Cara wants to go to San Fran…any suggestions?
KAREN–Jay Leno does tend to have foot in mouth at times. Every deserves a 2nd chance.
C,
Hope to be able to see you guys when you fly out. My G/F lives in the Bay Area… you better look me up!
As to the “pace” of California… I live in a small town… very slow paced… when a dog gets hit by a car it makes the front page of the paper! You guys’d love it! Housing is pretty cheep here right now, too…
Peace,
Matty
Matty–e-mail me your info. No promises though. Cara has never been to Ca so she wants to do a lot of wandering around.
