Shut Up And Let Them Sing
I’m going to let you all in on little secret, I sometimes listen to Christian music. I like some of the songs I must confess. I Can Only Imagine I rock out to.
I grew up on Christian music. I would listen to Geoff Moore, Point of Grace, New Song, the list goes on and on. Now I only listen to Christian music in the privacy of my car on the way to work. That is only if there is a good song on. (I don’t listen to it at the house, it drives Cara nuts)
When I was 13 I went to an Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith concert and loved it. As I grew older I went to numerous Christian concerts, Steve Camp, Carmen, Petra, Steven Curtis Chapman, the list goes on.
I wonder what happened to me and why I was thinking this as I belted out the News Boys latest song. Then the song ended and the D.J. comes and I realized why I stopped listening to Christian music. The D.J. says: Are you struggling with secret sin in your life? Are you having an affair, or gay/lesbian?
I hit scan on the ol dial and stop on Big Black Horse and a Cherry Tree.
Now I know that the D.J. wants people to come to Jesus and know his love. But really I was feeling pretty darn good listening to the music and belting out lyrics. I felt like telling the D.J. why ruin a good thing with trying to guilt me out.
I felt the same way at many a concert when I was growing up. I just rocked out with a thousand other Christians then wham-o the guilt trip. The people around me would start flooding to the ‘altar’ which was really just the base of the stage.
These people who moments before were having a grand time just listening to some good music. As I hit the scan on my radio I wanted to say shut up and let them sing.

do you think people say stuff like that because they hate you? curious
REBECCA–No, I don’t think people say things like that because they hate me. I think they say things because they truly believe it.
I know what you mean–my sister and I were walking across the campus of her university a couple days ago and heard music floating over loudspeakers from somewhere, started singing along unconsciously, only to realize it was Christian music, which we listened to growing up.
We talked about the fact that even though we no longer attend conservative Christian churches for exactly what you said–the guilt trip (in our case, that we had to be the “perfect woman” who followed the man in our lives and did not doubt God, neither of which we necessarily could or wanted to do).
What makes me so disappointed is that I love the music, but I can no longer just listen to it passively. Just like when I go to church and I find myself writing furiously arguments with the pastor in a notebook because I can’t handle just listening while people around me say, “Amen.”
Casting Crowns, Stephen Curtis Chapman, Rich Mullins (I remember when he passed away I was heartbroken), Point of Grace, Andrew Peterson…so many good ones…
WE LOVE TEA- I listen to the music, and at one point attended church to be up lifted. Like an oasis in the week. I hear you, it started to feel like it was coming from all sides.
Just wore me down.
I have pretty much come to the point of listening to my favorite Christian music in my car… but on CD now… so I can avoid the unfortunate verbal vomit of the well-meaning DJs… I hear ya!
