God Just Gagged
Last night I worked until midnight. When I got home it turned on the ol goggle box and watched part of CNN’s Gods Warriors.
I watched the part on Jerry Falwell, and Russell Johnson, John Hagee, and Jimmy Carter. I turned off the TV. when they were getting to the segment on teen God warriors.
Jerry Falwell was being interviewed, a week before his ticker said, “times up.” He said that at LU (Liberty University) they wanted to raise “Pit Bulls for Christ.” Pit bulls for Christ?! Oh for fucks sakes, what the hell was he thinking?Did Jerry Falwell not know anything about Pit Bulls or did he?
Let’s compare: (I did some research on Pit Bulls)Pit Bulls are known to be aggressive, unpredictable, attack small children and adults, they will attack those who love them without reason. I found the city ordinance for Cincinnati to own a Pitt, here’s what it says:
REQUIREMENTS TO OWN A PIT BULL TERRIER IN THE CITY LIMITS
Pit bull must be registered with the Cincinnati Police Department by November 1, 2003.
You may only own one pit bull over 6 months old.
Pit bulls must be under the control of a competent adult.
Pit bulls require muzzles and leashes, leash not to exceed 3 feet in length.
Pit bulls require special housing and/or caging.
Pit bulls are considered vicious dogs.
Liability insurance ($50,000) is required for pit bulls.
Now let’s do the far right Christians. Hmm…maybe Jerry Falwell did know what he was doing when he said he wanted to raise Pitt Bulls For Christ. It fits.
Russell Johnson from Ohio said that he helped to get the pro marriage amendment passed. He stated that no were in the paper work did it say anti-gay, but pro marriage. Now does he really think that people are that stupid? That’s like saying, “I’m not anti Jewish, but pro Nazi.” Please Russell don’t justify your homophobia by pretending the rest of us are idiots.
I didn’t really watch John Hagee. I was looking for something to eat. Jimmy Carter gets my support. I can dig his form of Christianity. I’m cool with people believing that God didn’t create “Adam and Steve but Adam and Eve.” People are free to believe what they like. I am all for that. Carter basically said that religion and politics shouldn’t mix. That the Christians job is to take care of people not involve themselves in hot topic issues. Jimmy dropped out of the Southern Baptist convention after they said women couldn’t speak in church. He said that the Churches job is to welcome people, no matter their differences. Go Jimmy.
I wasn’t going to watch teenage God Warriors. No thank you. That would just have pissed me off. After watching Jesus Camp I think so much of Christianity is cultish. That I can’t bear to watch teenagers with their minds taken over by rhetoric shoved down their throats when they were too young to know any better.
What pissed me off in the parts I saw of Gods Warriors is how much the Christian right plays that they are victims. We can’t have the ten commandments out side the court house, or kids can’t pray in school…ect. Yet they feel they have the right to tell me who to love. If they are so against gay marriage I suggest they don’t marry someone who is gay. If they are so opposed to abortion, don’t get an abortion. I can’t stand the woe is me mentality of the Christian right.
They have billions of dollars, and are trying to take over the government. They can force their religion and beliefs on the rest of the country, a country that was founded on freedom of religion. A country that was formed because people left the oppression of religion to have freedom of religion.

Major kudos!!!

great post!! those far right christian groups are out of their mind.
totally; they put the “mental” in fundamentalist
As usual it’s a very small fraction who get the attention… the fraction that makes for the most dramatic press. (Same is true on “the other side” - it’s not the quiet articular liberals who make headlines, it’s Howard Dean going “AAAAAAGH!”.)
They cannot “force their religion and beliefs” on anyone - and they realize this. (Speaking as one myself, actually.) They do have very firm beliefs about the consequences of certain actions - having an abortion, for instance. And they’d like to make sure that they retain the freedom to say “what you’re doing will hurt you, and this is why”. That’s not quite the same as saying you can’t love someone of the same sex, or saying that you must go to church.
Should they be worried? they see quite a lot of work to get turned into “Jimmy Carters” - religion is a fine thing in private, just don’t make a big deal out of it and DON’T tell other people how to live their lives. The most basic parts of a belief system - anyone’s beliefs - contradict that: If this is true, then it is true for everyone. (Including the belief that it’s wrong to force one’s own beliefs on others.)
Christians in particular see an extra component - if this is true, then it’s too good NOT to be shared; those who really believe it feel they cannot possibly keep silent. That does NOT mean that it’s okay to be aggressive and rude, or to attack small children. Those who act like “pit bulls” should remember that the Gospel message itself is enough “offense” as it is - no need to add to it. It’s truly unfortunate that some forget.
It works both ways - much of what “far right” Christians object to is not so much the fact that some things exist or are done. (Yes, really.) Rather, they object to attempts to normalize competing ideas about behavior and morality by teaching them in schools.
For instance, I gather you would object strongly to a local minister getting class time in a public school to teach the kids that homosexuality is wrong. They have the exact same objection to the idea of “sex ed” classes that teach kids that sex outside of marriage is normal and healthy. In both cases the problem isn’t necessarily the idea itself, but rather the attempt to “indoctrinate” by teaching one side without question or challenge.
But no, we’re not all a bunch of frothing raving lunatics who’d like to crucify everyone the slightest bit different.
Wow, I do go on. Sorry about hijacking yer soapbox here, maybe I should’ve just posted from my own.
How do we all live together in a society that, on its surface, claims to tolerate differences in beliefs, thoughts and morals?
People admire Jimmy Carter’s take on religion because many problems arise when religion is foisted into the public sphere.
Like in schools, which are paid for by my tax dollars, as well.
Do I think any religious/moral group should get a free pass in a school, other than as part of an exhibit or discussion of ideas held by this vastly diverse country? No. Not if they agreed with me, not if they disagreed with me. However, should children be taught how to get along in a pluralistic society, and be given the science to cope with being with others and their own maturing selves? Yes.
Children need to be taught about what’s happening with their bodies and how to prevent the transmission of disease. That’s all sex ed is. You take away the sex part and children don’t get the entire story. Not knowing the entire story is where serious, life-altering problems can fester and explode.
Also, homosexuals do exist in the world. Further, there is a large, and as yet incomplete, body of scientific knowledge pertaining to the issue. Children would enter the world with an arm tied behind their back in this area if they weren’t exposed to the science behind the debate.
With the knowledge of the science, and armed with the moral training they get at home, children can come to their own religious, moral conclusions. Just as we all did when we were children.
Teaching children about science or facts isn’t indoctrination; it’s educational exposure. And that’s what school is all about.
Sorry, I have to speak up. I am a devout Christian and I have three American Pit Bull Terriers. I have to say that you didn’t do very good research if you only found the negitive on my breed of dog. I’ll have to bet to only looked at the news stories that are out there. If you would have really research the APBT you would have found numerous site that say lust the opposite of what all the new’s sensational stories say. You give me the impression that you are a somewhat intelligent person, but you have the logic of all the other “cattle” in america. My question for you is do you own a APBT or know anyone that owns a APBT? Is that APBT from a reputable breeder?
Very Passionate Christian and APBT Owner
P.S. The bible does say man shall not lay with man!
BUD, the bible says a lot of things that aren’t followed. *shrugs* But I’ve learned that people pick and choose what part of the bible they will follow.
As for pit bulls, I just looked up a city ordinance for pit bulls. I think there is probably a reason for that.
MAYBEBI, my sex ed class didn’t teach me that sex outside of marriage is healthy and normal. It just taught me about sex, stds, and contraceptives. The sex ed class didn’t say anything pro, or con about sex.
I under stand that if people believe in a higher power they want to share that with others. People want to talk about positive/negative things in their lives that have made some sort of difference. It’s when it goes to the government to legislate love and relationships that there is an issue.
People are free to believe, but I don’t say all heterosexual couples must be fruitful and multiply and have as many kids as they should because that’s what the bible says.
Well, I consider myself a Christian, but I very much believe that church and state should be most specifically separate.
That’s not to say that “faith-based initiatives” are inherently wrong in my view; I think it seems to be a good thing if governments give their approval for churches to do good.
As far as pit bulls, well, they could go the direction that bulldogs, Rottweilers, and other such breeds have gone– dominant temperments that should be trained, but otherwise good dogs. It is unfortunate that some are still breeding them to fight, be vicious, etc. because it need not be that way– just like Christians need not be on the offense and aggressively attack anything perceived to be against the Gospel.
As far as sex ed, yeah, I agree. If parents were willing to step up and inform their children, maybe it would not be necessary, but it’s been quite clear that they have not, and so it needs to be discussed at school.
I believe discussion about sex (all of it) does not imply condoning promiscuity or risky behaviors, and I do agree that parents can teach their beliefs to their children at home… and trust if they are good and just about it, their children will learn to make their own decisions.
Speaking from my own dysfunctional childhood, no one likes a control freak. LOL
LOL! Sometimes they even make God vomit - puke throw up!
You are aware that good ol’ boy Rod Parsley wants it enacted into Law, that if found guilty of adultery cheating on your spouse then its an automatic sentence of Life in Prison.
What do you think they’re smokin’ crack cocaine or meth?
