What Gays and Lesbians Have Given To Society

It boggles my mind how some sections of society don’t think that gays and lesbians should have the same rights as straight people.

The government doesn’t want us to have the same rights, but demands that we pay taxes. What if all the gays and lesbians said: No. We don’t want to pay taxes until we have the same protections as everyone else.

I do believe the government would flip the fuck out, and we’d all end up in lesbian/gay federal prison.

As a whole I think society at times tends to over look the contributions lesbians/gays have made.  Because someone has a different sexual orientation than them that stops the mind right there.

Lesbians and Gays once went unnoticed, unheard, and unseen.  If they were noticed, seen, and heard people tried to quiet them.  Kinda like children.

So I’ve done some research on what gays and lesbians have given to society.  Besides our apparent ability to destroy marriage, and family.

Eleanor Roosevelt, besides being a real looker she was a lesbian.  She helped the UN draft Declaration of Human Rights, made a stand for equal rights, worked with and for children.

Gene Robinson, He is the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal church.  His being elected caused a divide in the Church.

Rev. Peter Gomes, Chaplin of Harvard University.

Roberta Achtenberg, Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, under President Clinton.  First lesbian, gay, bisexual person to be confirmed to a subcommittee by the senate.

  Cal Anderson, Washington State legislator.

The list goes on and on.

Not just those people. There are people who will never get their name on the internet, or a history book.  The lesbians and gays who go to work every day, and influence those around them.

There are the people who will make the paper because of the anti gay sentiment thrown their way.  Those people chose to fight back, and say I’m not going to take it.

Loving someone of the same gender isn’t anything new. Having people disagree with it isn’t anything new.

What’s got people riled up is that people aren’t going to be oppressed for loving someone of the same gender.

Take away what gays and lesbians and those who are labeled as not equal by society, and society would be severely lacking.

Songs would go unsung, books would go unwritten, erase the Sistine Chapel, throw out Emily Dickinson, and lives would be untouched and unchanged.

I will continue to live my life, and give to society. If at times if it seems society doesn’t want to give back.  I live my life knowing that change doesn’t come over night.  People tend to be resistant to change, even if it is for the better in the long run.

Maybe, just maybe, at the end of my life one person will say that I made a difference for the better in their life.  Not because I’m a lesbian, but because I’m a human who happened to be a lesbian and chose to give anyway.

  4. I am a fan of your avatar, also.
It never ceases to amaze me that anyone cares about orientation of anyone except for their immediate partner. When was it written that we should all be concerned about who everyone else was sleeping with, when we don’t sleep with but one at a time (usually).

  5. I think some people would point to the bible nwlimited.
